Moscow: Prepares Nuclear shelters in Moscow.
Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
After installing anti-aircraft defense systems on the roofs of government buildings, Moscow is now beginning to publicize the activation of nuclear shelters.
According to current and former officials who spoke to the Moscow Times, nuclear shelters to protect civilians from atomic bombardments across Russia are undergoing systematic inspections and upgrades on orders from the Kremlin.
In a different case and in previous years, we would have thought this is routine maintenance of Russian nuclear shelters, but not now.
Their preparations as the war in Ukraine drags on and local authorities spend hundreds of millions of rubles to make nuclear shelters fit for long-term habitation again mean they believe an escalation between NATO and Russia is very likely.
"The government decided to inspect the shelter network in the spring," a Russian official said, citing knowledge of government meetings on the matter.
Moscow's old bunkers can collectively house up to 15 million people in the event of a nuclear war and can supply food for at least a month.
Of course, similar Nuclear shelters are in operation in all major cities of Russia.
