Will Kaliningrad be the next target?

The dire situation in US-Russia relations seems to be getting out of control, especially after a Russian warplane downed the American MQ-9 Reaper drone, creating reasonable concerns for the future of the war in Ukraine, more generally for the Global security system.

Amid tensions between Russia and the United States-led NATO, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) have begun a series of tactical air exercises with their state-of-the-art Su-30 fighter jets.

The press office of the Baltic Fleet said on March 20 that more than ten crew members of advanced Su-30SM and Su-30SM2 fighter jets began tactical flight exercises with a bombing in Russia's westernmost enclave in the Kaliningrad region.

"During the exercises, the pilots are trained to destroy enemy columns of military material, command posts, accumulated manpower, military-industrial facilities, enemy aircraft, airborne and amphibious assault forces, as well as to provide support to units of his army Baltic Fleet," the press office said in a statement.

The statement said the pilots "honed" their skills in maneuvering during aerial combat and their ability to conduct reconnaissance and conduct airstrikes with weapons and bombs.

For its part, Russia has conducted several exercises since the beginning of 2022 in the Baltic region, testing the readiness of its troops and preparing them for missions in this strategic region, where the two sides regularly face each other, if and in a non-confrontational way.

The recent Russian air exercises, however, are significant for several reasons. First, it comes days after the Russian Su-27 Flanker was accused of spraying and destroying a US MQ-9 Reaper drone, causing it to crash into the Black Sea.

And secondly, and always, the most critical part of these latest exercises is that Russia's newest and most advanced Su-30SM2 fighter jets are pounding virtual targets in the Baltic.

Sweden and Finland are already formally in the anteroom for admission to the grand alliance of NATO and essentially with bilateral treaties of strategic support from England and other Western countries.

Tension with Russia has already escalated from the North Arctic Sea to the Bosphorus Straits in Istanbul.
