Latvia donates cars seized by drunk drivers to Ukraine.

Thursday, March 9, 2023. Seven cars were transported yesterday in the middle of a snowstorm on a trailer from a public yard bound for Ukraine.

Two hundred cars were confiscated from owners found to have blood alcohol levels above 0.15% in the Baltic country of 1.9 million people in two months. "It's quite scary when you realize how many cars are driving around with drunk drivers," said Reinis Poznaks, founder of the NGO Twitter Convoy, which the government has selected to deliver the vehicles to Ukraine.

He said that the two hundred seized cars the state has pledged to hand over to him every week to send to Ukraine will test the limits of his largely voluntary business.

Latvian Finance Minister Arvils Aserandens said the government was inspired by the success of the prived organization to abandon the idea of auctioning them off. "We are ready to do virtually anything to support the Ukrainians," he commented.

In a police operation yesterday, four officers blocked a road in Riga for half an hour to breathalyze drivers.

No one was found drunk, but last year 4,300 drivers were found to be driving with more than the legal limit and were involved in almost 1,000 accidents.

It is not yet known whether other drunk drivers from other countries that consume large amounts of alcohol will follow suit.
